by Angella Kay, The Light Keeper.com

Do you have a good phone voice and an excellent sales technique? You may have the right stuff to become a telemarketer!

Tools you'll need:

  • Computer

  • Telephone with second line

  • Headset, for comfort

  • Ability to type

  • Good phone voice and sales technique

Telemarketers are essentially telephone salespeople, and typically involves "cold-calling," contacting people who are unaware of your product, using lists and/or telephone books.

There are many types of products and services sold via telemarketers, such as window washing, auto repair, charitable donation solicitation, etc. When investigated a telemarketing opportunity, make sure it is legitimate. If it sounds suspicious or possibly illegal, pass on the opportunity. In fact, if you're sure something is illegal (such as Pyramid or Ponzi schemes), contact the authorities in your area.

Telemarketers can earn anywhere from $5 to $25 per hour, depending on the pay structure. Most telemarketing firms pay "per lead," or on commission, where your pay increases with your lead amount. Some firms also give bonuses on top of commissions for their most successful telemarketers.
