Work at Home Ideas

There are basically three types of work-at-home jobs: telecommuting, contract work/freelance and business ownership. There are advantages and disadvantages to each one - you will need to choose what suits your experience, personality and work situation best.

Telecommuting is a good option for those who already have a job or have a potential job where telecommuting might be a good option. Advantages include having your taxes and insurance taken care of, steady work and benefits like vacation and flex time. Disadvantages include working for a boss, having less flexibility about work/schedule/hours and the possibility of having to return to the workplace should the telecommuting situation not work out.

How Can I Convince My Boss to Let Me Telecommute?

Jobs suited for telecommuting include bookkeeping, customer service, data entry and telemarketing.

Contract Work or Freelance Work is an excellent option for those with a marketable skill that may not require regular work hours. For example, most businesses don't need a web designer on staff, but they do need to have a web page. Hiring a contract worker or freelancer allows the client to accomplish their goal, while the freelancer is afforded greater flexibility and a set contract length. Disadvantages include being responsible for your taxes and home office setup, lack of steady work (depending on your area) and the necessity to continually market yourself and your services.

Jobs suited for Contract or Freelance Work include web design, desktop publishing, secretarial services and writing.

Business Ownership is a challenging and rewarding opportunity for those who have the desire and will to work for themselves. Business Ownership, which also includes Franchises and Party Plans, requires dedication to your business and a willingness to succeed; more extroverted personalities will find this field a perfect fit for their social and ambitious skills. Disadvantages include start-up fees, locating and attending required training and being responsible for all of the paperwork (including taxes) involved in owning a business.

Jobs suited for Business Ownership include daycare, party plans and consultants.
